It might be technology, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's more of a direction from their accounting department about how they want to track things. At least this year they have Steam clearly called out as a separate option on the SE store, which is better than some past years. If I had to guess, most likely there are a lot of people at SE who would also like to fix this, because it probably causes them an endless amount of customer support grief. Either that or their accounting departments have another method that was built to handle this from the get-go and it's not so messy. Steam just keeps the 30% of whatever sales made on Steam itself, and not elsewhere). Other games like ESO have it set up so you can subscribe and buy premium currency directly from Steam, so it may be this was the "concession" they negotiated with Steam in order to not have to deal with this (e.g. It may also mean another complex interaction on the MogStation since you might have to convert the PC keys into Steam keys for Steam customers so that they can track the entitlements properly (so Steam users who pay on Steam and those who pay outside Steam end up going through the same aligned flow in the end). They'd probably also have to keep track of any PC sales where the customer has not yet redeemed it on the MogStation, because any of those could potentially have a portion that goes to Steam. Otherwise, you'd have to do it through the MogStation based on which accounts are linked to Steam when you actually redeem the PC code, and that means Accounting can't figure royalties out without reconciling PC sales with MogStation data. Treating it like a separate platform (the way they were already separating PS4) was probably the easiest way for them to do it since it can be calculated based directly on sales of different SKUs. Unlike Windows and PlayStation though, you cannot own both and must pick between Windows or Steam. Steam and Windows FFXIV licenses are as different as PlayStation and Windows and require separate purchases. Hi there! It saves you hassle and SE hassle from having to switch orders around. You need to ALWAYS buy a PC Version and not a Steam Version If you have bought FFXIV from PC SE Store. You need to ALWAYS buy from steam versions for now on. I remember there being A LOT of talk from newbies not understanding something very very important, during the Stormblood release days.
